Sourav Ganguly Warns Shubman Gill About Pressure Ahead
After leading India to a remarkable 336-run win at Edgbaston and leveling the five-match series 1-1, Shubman Gill’s early days as Test captain are being closely watched. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, while celebrating his 53rd birthday at Eden Gardens, praised Gill’s exceptional performance but also gave a word of caution.
“This is the best I’ve seen him bat and I’m not surprised,” Ganguly said. The young skipper has scored 585 runs in two Tests at an average of 146.25, including three centuries and a double hundred. His latest knocks of 269 and 161 have set a new record for the highest match total by an Indian batter and placed him just 18 runs behind Rahul Dravid’s 2002 England tour tally of 602.
However, Ganguly warned that the road ahead won’t be easy. “It’s a honeymoon period right now. The real pressure will come in the next three Tests,” he added.
Gill Chases History While Team India Rebuilds
Gill’s incredible run has also brought him within reach of Sir Don Bradman’s record of 810 runs in a single Test series as captain, set during the 1936–37 Ashes. With three matches left, Gill needs 225 more runs to surpass that landmark.
As India competes without senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Ganguly pointed out the strength of Indian cricket’s bench. “There’s always been talent in Indian cricket. After every legend, new players emerge—now we have Gill, Jaiswal, Akash Deep, Mukesh, Siraj filling the gap,” he said.
Despite the dominant win, Ganguly reminded everyone that the series is far from finished. “It’s one-all right now. India has played well, but they need to start fresh again in the next match at Lord’s,” he concluded.
With three crucial Tests ahead, all eyes remain on Shubman Gill and Team India to see if they can maintain their momentum and rewrite cricketing history.
