Akash Deep: Career Overview
Akash Deep (born 15 December 1996) is an Indian international cricketer. He plays as a right-arm fast bowler and right-handed lower-order batter for the India national cricket team in international cricket. Domestically, he represents Bengal in the domestic cricket circuit and plays for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Servotech Siliguri Strikers in the Bengal Pro T20 League. Akash Deep was born in Dehri, Bihar, and grew up in Kolkata, West Bengal. He made his international debut in 2024 against England in the fourth Test of their series.
Personal Life
Akash Deep’s father, Ramji Singh, served as a government school teacher in Bihar’s Sasaram. Akash faced opposition from both his parents and neighbors for his passion for cricket over academics. During a time when the Bihar Cricket Association was suspended, there were no proper platforms for aspiring cricketers to pursue their career in cricket, and Akash Deep struggled to find the right opportunities. Many parents in Bihar advised their children to avoid associating with Akash as they feared their children would follow his example and neglect academics.
Despite his father’s desire for Akash to take exams for government jobs, Akash remained focused on his cricketing ambitions. However, he faced a huge personal setback when his father and elder brother both passed away unexpectedly, leaving Akash to become the breadwinner for his family.
Early Career
Akash Deep joined a cricket club in Durgapur, which helped him manage his daily expenses. He initially started by playing tennis-ball matches around Durgapur, earning around INR 600 per day. He later joined United Club in the CAB first division league in 2010 to pursue his cricket dreams. Akash initially began his training as a frontline batsman but switched to fast bowling at the request of his coaches as he grew taller. He was part of India’s Vision 2020 programme, where he worked alongside former Bengal fast bowler Ranadeb Bose, and was selected for the Bengal U-23 cricket team within a year.
He faced a significant back injury during this time, which threatened his career. However, with support from his coach, Sourasish Lahiri, he underwent rehabilitation and made a successful comeback.
Domestic Career
Akash Deep made his Twenty20 debut for Bengal in the 2018–19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 9 March 2019. He made his List A debut on 24 September 2019, for Bengal in the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy, and his first-class debut on 25 December 2019 for Bengal in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy.
In August 2021, he was included in the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad for the second phase of the IPL in the UAE. In February 2022, he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the 2022 IPL season. He also impressed with eleven wickets, including two four-wicket hauls, in tour games for India A against England Lions before receiving his Test call-up.
International Career
Akash Deep replaced injured Shivam Mavi in India’s squad for the 2022 Asian Games. In November 2023, he was included in India’s ODI squad for the series against South Africa as an injury replacement for Deepak Chahar, though he did not feature in any matches.
In February 2024, Akash Deep received his maiden Test call-up for the home series against England. He received the news while playing for Bengal in the 2023–24 Ranji Trophy.
Akash Deep was named in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy squad for India against England in 2025. Although he was not selected for the first Test, he played a crucial role in the second Test, stepping in for Jasprit Bumrah. Akash Deep achieved his maiden 10-wicket haul, with 4 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the second, helping India register their first-ever win at Birmingham.
