The Afghanistan men’s national cricket team represents Afghanistan in international cricket. It is a full Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test, One-Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) status.

Cricket has been played in Afghanistan since the mid-19th century, but it was only in the early 21st century that the national team began to enjoy success. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) was formed in 1995, becoming an affiliate member of the ICC in 2001 and a member of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in 2003. In 2017, Afghanistan was granted full ICC membership and Test status, alongside Ireland. The team’s rise has been a symbol of hope and resilience in a nation that has faced numerous challenges.

Due to the persistent conflict in Afghanistan, the national team moved its home ground to Dehradun, India. Afghanistan’s current home ground is the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the UAE.

Early History and Struggles

Cricket in Afghanistan was popularized by Afghan expatriates who learned the game while living in Pakistan during the 1980s and 1990s. The Afghanistan Cricket Federation was founded in 1995, and despite being banned by the Taliban, cricket became one of the few approved sports in Afghanistan during the early 2000s. Afghanistan played in various regional tournaments, with the team making a strong debut in Pakistan’s domestic cricket setup in the early 2000s.

In 2006, the team toured England, winning six out of seven matches, and also performed well in the ACC Trophy. The team’s first major tournament victory came in 2007 when they shared the ACC Twenty20 Cup with Oman.

The Rise to ODI and Test Status

Afghanistan earned its ODI status in 2009 after a successful World Cricket League campaign. The team continued to make progress, winning several regional tournaments, including the 2010 ACC Trophy Elite and the 2010 ICC World Cricket League Division 3. Afghanistan made its World Cup debut in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, and in 2017, the team was granted Test status, making Afghanistan a full member of the ICC.

Afghanistan’s success in the 2019 Cricket World Cup was also notable, where they gained a reputation for resilience, despite not winning any matches in the round-robin stage. The team has also seen success in the ICC Champions Trophy, the ACC Premier League, and the ACC Trophy, consistently outperforming expectations.

Home Grounds and Current Setup

Due to ongoing security issues, Afghanistan does not play its home matches in Afghanistan. Initially, the team used Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the UAE, before shifting to India in 2017. They have played home series in Dehradun and have recently moved their base to the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, India, in 2019.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has focused on infrastructure development and has built international-standard stadiums in Afghanistan, including the Alokozay Kabul International Cricket Ground and the Ghazi Amanullah International Cricket Stadium in Jalalabad.

Afghanistan’s team wears cricket whites in Test matches, with a red cap or sun hat featuring the ACB logo. For limited-overs matches, the team wears a predominantly blue kit with accents of red, green, black, and yellow. The ACB logo is displayed on the left breast, with the main sponsor’s logo in the center of the shirt. Afghanistan’s team helmets are now blue, featuring the Afghanistan tricolor flag.
