Yograj Singh Suggests Grooming Bumrah into an All-Rounder
Yograj Singh, father of former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh, has put forward a radical idea for India’s bowling department. In a recent interview, Yograj emphasized that bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah should be groomed into all-rounders by working on their batting skills. He pointed out that current Indian bowlers rarely contribute with the bat and suggested the team management should make a concerted effort to turn them into reliable all-rounders.
Yograj’s call is for a return to the days when India had influential all-rounders like Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag, who played pivotal roles in both batting and bowling. He argued that India should not be labeling bowlers as “tailenders” but instead should train them to be well-rounded players.
India’s Focus on Batting Skills for Bowlers
According to Yograj Singh, Indian bowlers could be much more impactful if they spent more time in the nets focusing on batting. He recalled the time when legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev was not given enough focus on his batting skills in the nets, despite his ability to contribute significantly lower down the order.
“The problem with the Indian squad right now is that we are not looking to make the bowlers into all-rounders,” Yograj Singh stated. “If we worked with bowlers like Bumrah and made them bat for 1-2 hours daily after their bowling sessions, it could turn them into invaluable all-rounders.”
Yograj also referenced Arshdeep Singh, suggesting that if Arshdeep had been included in the playing XI during the India-England Test series, his contributions with the bat could have made a difference in India’s results. He believes the failure to utilize lower-order batsmen has cost India in tight Test series.
