Sehwag Speaks on Bumrah’s Workload Management
India’s recent tour of England ended in a 2-2 draw, with Shubman Gill leading a young squad that impressed many. The series marked a new era for Indian Test cricket following the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Among the debates that followed, Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management stood out as the most discussed topic.
The team management decided to rest Jasprit Bumrah for two Tests despite him being fit. He featured in the first, third, and fourth matches but skipped the final game at The Oval. India needed a win in that match to clinch the series. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj bowled in all five Tests, highlighting the difference in workload distribution.
Sehwag Explains Why Workload Matters for Bowlers
Former India opener Virender Sehwag has now weighed in on the issue. Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Sehwag stressed the importance of workload management, particularly for fast bowlers.
“I think workload is important, especially for bowlers. For batsmen, I don’t think workload is a problem, since they can play and don’t have to play too many matches anyway. So, I think it’s important mainly for bowlers, especially fast bowlers,” Sehwag said.
He further explained that careful management of fast bowlers could extend their careers and improve India’s chances in global tournaments.
Bumrah’s Availability for Asia Cup Confirmed
“If they are managed properly, they can play for a longer time. For India, it’s important that all fast bowlers stay fit, because in big events like the Asia Cup or World Cup, if they are available, India’s chances of winning will be higher,” he added.
Rumors about Bumrah missing the upcoming Asia Cup, starting September 9, were also cleared after his inclusion in India’s 15-member squad. This move assured fans that the pace spearhead remains crucial for India’s plans in major tournaments.
