Sourav Ganguly Re-Elected as CAB President
Former India skipper and ex-BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has been unanimously chosen as the new president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). With no other nominations filed, Ganguly stepped back into the role unopposed, succeeding his brother Snehasish Ganguly, who had led the body for almost three years.
Speaking after his re-election, Ganguly told ANI, “I have worked as a President for 5 years before this as well. We will do what is best. There is an immense craze for cricket in India. There is a lot of talent. It will be our work to give direction to this talent.”
Leadership Journey Beyond Bengal
Ganguly had earlier served as CAB president from 2015 to 2019 before moving on to become the BCCI president in 2019. He stayed in that position until 2022, when Roger Binny replaced him. More recently, he was reappointed as the chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, a responsibility he first took up in 2021.
Praise for India in Asia Cup 2025
Commenting on India’s emphatic win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup Super Four clash, Ganguly lauded the side’s form. He said, “India is a very good team. We have a good chance to win (Asia Cup). I hope we will play well.”
India chased down Pakistan’s 172-run target with ease, thanks to Abhishek Sharma’s blazing 74 and vice-captain Shubman Gill’s composed 47. The victory boosted India’s chances of reaching the final.
Congratulations to Mithun Manhas
The former captain also congratulated Mithun Manhas, who has filed his nomination for the BCCI president’s role. Ganguly remarked, “I congratulate him as it is a very big post. Being the President of the richest and most skilled board, the cricketers who play for India are an unbelievable talent. It is a huge responsibility to manage and guide them. I hope he will work really well along with his team.”
Manhas, who scored nearly 10,000 runs in first-class cricket, has worked extensively in coaching after retirement, including with several IPL teams. With no challenger so far, his name is almost confirmed for the top job.
Likely New Faces in BCCI Setup
Reports suggest that Rajeev Shukla will stay on as vice-president, while secretary Devajit Saikia is also expected to continue. Ex-India spinner Raghuram Bhat could become treasurer, replacing Prabhtej Bhatia, who may shift to the joint secretary’s role. Former Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Shah is tipped to join the Apex Council, while Mizoram’s Khairul Jamal Majumdar is likely to move to the IPL Governing Council.
