Siraj Insisted on Playing Oval Test, Says Morkel
India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj has been the standout performer in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, leading the wicket charts with 20 dismissals. Despite playing all five Tests and clocking over 180 overs, Siraj showed no signs of slowing down as he charged in again on Day 4 of the Oval Test, taking two crucial wickets and supporting Prasidh Krishna from the other end.
According to bowling coach Morne Morkel, Siraj was given the option to rest before the final Test, but the 31-year-old insisted on playing. “He was the first guy to say, ‘Listen, I want to play this Test match. I want to win it for the team’,” Morkel revealed after stumps on Day 4.
With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable for the last match, Siraj willingly stepped up to lead India’s pace attack, something he also did during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His determination and resilience have been crucial to India’s campaign in the high-pressure series against England.
Siraj’s Attitude and Effort Praised by Team Management
Morkel praised Siraj’s leadership and attitude, calling him a “natural leader” who leads through action. “He’s the guy who always puts his hand up to bowl extra overs or create opportunities,” Morkel said. Siraj took four wickets in the first innings and has already claimed two in the second, dismissing Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope.
“Even at the back end today, he stepped up again to lift the team in crucial moments. That’s the kind of smart play you need,” said Morkel. He emphasized how Siraj’s positive mindset and willingness to take responsibility make him a role model for young fast bowlers.
As Day 5 approaches, England need 35 runs to win while India require four wickets. No matter the outcome, Siraj’s performances and attitude have left a lasting mark on the series, proving his evolution into a dependable match-winner for India.
