Gill’s Asia Cup 2025 T20I Inclusion Remains Uncertain
With the Asia Cup 2025 approaching, Indian selectors are preparing to name the squad as defending champions. Among the names being discussed, Shubman Gill has emerged as a potential comeback candidate for the T20I side. However, his place remains uncertain due to India’s aggressive new batting approach.
Gill recently led India to a 2-2 draw in the five-match Test series against England. He finished as the leading run-scorer across both teams. His prolific form and sharp leadership have impressed the selectors and triggered talks of a T20I return. Gill last played a T20I in Sri Lanka, where selectors also named him vice-captain for the white-ball formats. After the T20 World Cup, he led India to a 4-1 win in Zimbabwe, showcasing strong captaincy.
India’s T20I Template Challenges Gill’s Role
Since July 2024, India has crossed the 200-run mark in eight out of 13 first innings. The current batting unit—featuring Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, and Hardik Pandya—thrives on all-out aggression. This fearless approach contrasts with Gill’s style. He tends to start slow and build innings, as reflected in his IPL strike rate of 138.71.
Samson and Abhishek have locked down the opening slots. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also waiting in the wings. Fitting Gill into the top order could disrupt this settled dynamic.
Vice-Captaincy Twist Adds to the Puzzle
If Gill returns, he could reclaim the vice-captaincy from Axar Patel. Patel was appointed in January 2025 for the T20I series against England. Since then, he has proven vital with both bat and ball. His performance in the T20 World Cup final was key to India’s title win.
Dropping Axar could be seen as harsh, given his recent consistency and match-winning impact.
Timing Is Everything
Gill remains a central figure in Tests and ODIs. But for now, the current T20I setup seems too well-balanced to shake up. Selectors are focused on maintaining Suryakumar Yadav’s high-risk, high-reward formula. Disrupting this system ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup could backfire.
For the moment, the “prince” of Indian cricket may have to wait before reclaiming his T20I throne.
