Shubman Gill Eyes Don Bradman's 100-Year Records
Indian captain Shubman Gill is in red-hot form and is on the verge of breaking several world records, including those held by the legendary Don Bradman. With 585 runs already under his belt in the first two Tests of the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, Gill has the chance to etch his name in the history books.
Gill’s batting masterclass at Edgbaston saw him score 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, breaking Virat Kohli’s record for most runs in an innings by an Indian captain and Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian in a single Test match. He also became the first Asian captain to score a double century in SENA countries and the first in history to score a double hundred and 150 in the same match.
Bradman’s World Records Under Threat
One of the biggest milestones within reach is Don Bradman’s 810 runs as captain in a single Test series, set during the 1936–37 Ashes. Gill is just 225 runs away from surpassing this total. With three Tests still to play, this record is well within his reach. Bradman had also scored three centuries during that series — a feat Gill has already matched.
Gill is also chasing Bradman’s most iconic record — 974 runs in a single Test series, which the Australian legend scored in the 1930 Ashes in England. With 585 runs already, Gill needs 390 more to break this historic record. His current scoring rate and form give him a real shot at surpassing this nearly century-old mark.
Indian Legends’ Records in Sight
Besides world records, Gill is also closing in on Indian greats. He needs just 18 more runs to surpass Rahul Dravid’s 602 runs in a single Test series in England. With 127 more runs, he can beat Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 712 runs against England, the most by any Indian in a bilateral Test series. Gill also stands 91 runs away from overtaking Virat Kohli’s 655 runs as captain in a series against England.
If he scores 148 more runs, Gill will also break Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 732 runs in a single Test series by an Indian captain, set in 1978–79.
With his current momentum, Shubman Gill is not just leading India with the bat, but also rewriting the cricketing record books. The remaining three Tests could be a defining chapter in the young skipper’s career, putting him in the same conversation as the greatest in the game’s history.
