Gill Might Miss Duleep Trophy 2025 Due to Illness
India skipper Shubman Gill’s participation in the Duleep Trophy 2025 looks doubtful as he is currently unwell. The inter-zonal tournament begins on August 28 at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. Gill had been appointed as captain of the North Zone team for the event.
The North Zone selectors had already been considering the possibility of Gill’s absence for a few days. As of Friday, August 22, no official communication was received by the zonal associations. Cricbuzz reported, “the physios recently examined him and submitted a health status report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about 24 hours ago.” Currently, Gill, 25, is resting at his home in Chandigarh.
Officials from the BCCI and the zonal selection panel have not responded to queries about Gill’s availability. However, sources close to the India Test skipper confirmed his unavailability for the upcoming matches.
Gill’s Limited Availability Amid Asia Cup Duty
Even if fully fit, Gill would have missed a major portion of the Duleep Trophy 2025, which runs until September 15. With the Asia Cup in the UAE starting on September 9, he could only have featured in the opening clash against East Zone. The North Zone will play their quarterfinal at the BCCI’s CoE ground in Bengaluru.
Gill recently returned from an impressive Test series in England, where he scored 754 runs in five matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. His outstanding form earned him a spot in India’s Twenty20 squad for the Asia Cup, where he was also named vice-captain.
Replacement Plans for North Zone
The North Zone selectors had already prepared for Gill’s absence by including Shubham Rohilla as his replacement during squad announcement. With Gill unavailable, vice-captain Ankit Kumar will now lead the side in the Duleep Trophy.
Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, both selected for India’s Asia Cup squad, will leave after the first game. If North Zone progresses, Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral will step in as replacements for the pacers.
The North Zone selection panel features Chetan Sharma (Haryana), Nikhil Chopra (Delhi), Amit Uniyal (Chandigarh), Mithun Minhas (J&K and convenor), Raj Kumar (Services), and Mukesh Kumar (Himachal Pradesh).
