Shubman Gill Impresses as India’s New Test Captain
Shubman Gill’s excellent performance in his debut Test series as India’s captain has caught the attention of many cricket experts. Among them is former England opener Mark Butcher, who has praised Gill’s technical skills and calm temperament. Gill has taken over the number four spot, previously held by legends like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, and has done so with confidence.
Butcher highlighted the pressure that comes with leading the Indian Test team and batting in such a critical position. However, Gill has shown great composure. With 585 runs in just four innings, including three centuries, he has made a powerful start as captain. Butcher said that Gill has looked very comfortable under pressure and may even break more records by the end of the series.
Gill’s Impact and India’s Strong Batting Unit
Gill’s consistent form has made him the key player in India’s batting order. Butcher also praised KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who both scored centuries in the series. Rahul, known for his solid technique, has adjusted well to opening the innings alongside Jaiswal after Rohit Sharma’s retirement.
Butcher expressed admiration for Rahul’s style, saying he looks perfectly suited to batting at the top. He believes Rahul’s average will soon rise above 40 as he continues to perform. Regarding Jaiswal, Butcher called him a generational talent. Despite a slight weakness against short-pitched deliveries, Jaiswal’s hunger for runs and love for batting have helped him succeed at the top level.
India’s Number Three Dilemma and Jaiswal’s Potential
Butcher noted that India still needs to finalize a reliable number three batsman. He mentioned that constant changes—such as replacing Sai Sudharsan after one Test and bringing in Karun Nair—might disrupt stability. He suggested that India must stick with one player in that position, even if early failures occur, because facing the new ball is always difficult.
Butcher spoke highly of Jaiswal’s work ethic, revealing that Kumar Sangakkara described the young batter as being obsessed with scoring runs. Despite some technical flaws, Jaiswal’s passion and determination are expected to help him overcome any weaknesses.
Butcher’s Love for Music Beyond Cricket
Outside of cricket, Butcher is also a passionate musician and songwriter. He has released albums inspired by real-life events, including one based on the COVID-19 pandemic. When asked whether he prefers music or cricket, Butcher said he considers himself lucky to have made a career out of both passions. From being a professional cricketer to a commentator and musician, he expressed gratitude for doing what he loves.
As India heads into the third Test at Lord’s, Gill, Rahul, and Jaiswal will be key players to watch. With strong individual performances and growing confidence, India hopes to take the lead in the series.
