Shreyas Iyer Snubbed in India Asia Cup 2025 Squad
Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad has sparked widespread debate. Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes the reason is Iyer’s leadership credentials. The right-handed batter, 30, had a stellar IPL season with Punjab Kings, scoring over 600 runs and guiding the team to their first final in 11 years. Despite this, he was left out of India’s 15-member squad and even the reserves, surprising fans and cricket analysts alike.
Panesar pointed out that the Indian selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, may have preferred younger players who are easier for head coach Gautam Gambhir to manage. “It’s about team dynamics. A younger player is easier to handle, and that may have influenced the decision,” Panesar told India Today.
Iyer’s Form and Talent Remain Unquestionable
Shreyas Iyer has consistently been in excellent form, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024 and contributing significantly to India’s Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. Panesar stressed that Iyer’s talent is undeniable and his runs make him impossible to ignore for future selection.
“If he keeps scoring runs, there is no reason for him to stay out of the team. His talent is exceptional, and India is lucky to have such a player,” Panesar added.
India will begin their Asia Cup campaign on September 10 against the United Arab Emirates. Suryakumar Yadav will captain the side with Shubman Gill as his deputy, while fans eagerly await how the squad performs in the tournament starting September 9 in the UAE.
