Shreyas Iyer snubbed from Asia Cup 2025 squad
Shreyas Iyer has been left out of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad despite his brilliant IPL season. The 30-year-old batter scored 604 runs for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 at an average of 50.33. His strike rate of 175.07 was the best among the top ten run-getters. With such form, Iyer expected a T20I return for the Asia Cup in the UAE.
However, the selectors had different plans. India opted to back multi-skilled players over a specialist like Iyer. His omission shocked many fans and experts, considering his experience and adaptability.
Ajit Agarkar explains Shreyas Iyer’s omission
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the exclusion during the squad announcement in Mumbai.
“It’s unfortunate that he misses out,” Agarkar admitted. “It’s no fault of his, neither ours. He has to wait for his chance.”
Iyer last played a T20I in December 2023 and has been pushing for a return since then. His recent IPL success strengthened his case, but the selection panel prioritized flexibility in team balance.
Why Rinku Singh and Riyan Parag got the nod
India’s selection strategy favored Rinku Singh and Riyan Parag over Shreyas Iyer. Rinku, a left-hander, offers variety alongside his finishing ability and occasional off-spin. Parag, named in the reserves, adds batting depth and a decent spin option.
Selectors value players who contribute in multiple ways, especially ahead of the T20 World Cup 2025. Iyer, despite being an improved batter against pace and spin, was seen as a specialist with limited secondary skills.
Tough competition in India’s middle order
Iyer’s preferred batting positions, No. 3 and 4, are already occupied. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have cemented their places. At No. 5 and beyond, India relies on all-rounders like Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, and wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma. To include Iyer, India would have needed a major reshuffle, something the selectors avoided.
Shreyas Iyer’s T20 future
India will play 15 T20Is before the T20 World Cup 2025 in India and Sri Lanka. Unless injuries strike, it looks difficult for Iyer to break back soon. Still, at only 30, his T20I career is far from over. He remains a valuable batter who could return with consistent performances.
