Shardul Thakur Targets 2027 ODI World Cup Comeback
Senior India pacer Shardul Thakur has followed Mohammed Shami’s example, putting the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee on alert. Even though he is currently out of India’s white-ball setup, Thakur has made it clear he’s eyeing a comeback. He aims to return for the 2027 ODI World Cup, targeting the No. 8 spot currently held by Harshit Rana.
The 34-year-old veteran has played 47 ODIs, 25 T20Is, and 13 Tests for India. His most recent white-ball appearance came in the 2023 ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh in Pune.
Thakur on Staying Match-Ready
While speaking to the media on the sidelines of the ongoing Ranji Trophy, the Mumbai skipper outlined his approach and focus.
“What is important for me is to keep playing matches and perform. To get back into the Indian team, I also need to keep having those good, match-winning performances, which is eventually going to help in the selection.”
Thakur made his Test return earlier this year during the England tour, following a strong Ranji season. However, he bowled only 21 overs across four innings, taking two wickets, and contributed a valuable 41 in the drawn Manchester Test. Despite that, he wasn’t picked for the home series against the West Indies or the upcoming India A red-ball games against South Africa A.
Eyes Firmly on the ODI World Cup
Looking ahead, Shardul believes there’s an opportunity waiting in South Africa when the next World Cup arrives.
“And, yes, the ODI World Cup is also in South Africa, so there might be a place open for a bowling all-rounder at No. 8. I am, of course, eyeing that spot,” he said.
That goal, however, won’t be easy to achieve. Harshit Rana, who currently occupies the position, has earned the full confidence of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Rana proved his worth by taking four wickets on a lively SCG track in the third ODI against Australia.
Ready Whenever India Calls
Despite the competition, Thakur insists he is mentally and physically prepared to answer the call whenever it comes.
“Whenever the Indian team needs me or whenever I am selected, I am ready to play international cricket. My preparation is such that if tomorrow I am asked to play international cricket, I am ready,” he said.
For now, the experienced pacer is focused on performing consistently in domestic cricket and keeping himself ready for any opportunity that could lead him back into the Indian ODI setup for the 2027 World Cup.
