Samson’s Batting Order Raises Questions in Asia Cup 2025
A fan favorite on social media, Sanju Samson’s selection in India’s playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025 match against UAE on Wednesday brought relief to many. However, when captain Suryakumar Yadav chose to bowl first, fans feared Samson might not get a chance with the bat after UAE collapsed for just 57 runs.
When India began their chase, Abhishek Sharma and newly appointed vice-captain Shubman Gill opened the innings. Abhishek Sharma scored a quick 30 off 16 balls before getting out, but instead of Samson, it was skipper Suryakumar who walked in to bat at No. 3.
Samson Forced to Adapt in Middle Order
This decision confirmed that Samson would no longer open alongside Abhishek, as Gill is expected to open every game. Many experts believed Samson would take up the No. 3 slot, but his name appeared at No. 5 on the team sheet.
The change puts pressure on Samson to adapt as a middle-order batter. Historically, Samson’s best numbers have come as an opener or at No. 3. As an opener, he averages 34.75 with a strike rate of 182, while at No. 3 his average stands at 38.6. But his numbers drop sharply lower down the order. At No. 4, he averages 19.3, and at No. 5 his average is only 11.3.
Samson even attempted middle-order batting during the Kerala Cricket League before the Asia Cup, but it was unsuccessful.
Big Question for India Before T20 World Cup
Samson’s ability to transition into a middle-order role will be closely watched. Despite his talent, his reduced impact at No. 5 or lower is a concern. Considering the relatively low competition in the Asia Cup, India remain favorites to win the title. But as head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav look toward the 2026 T20 World Cup, solving the “Samson riddle” has become critical.
