Sanju Samson’s Asia Cup spot in doubt
Sanju Samson finds himself in the middle of a major selection debate ahead of the Asia Cup. Despite scoring three centuries in his last 12 T20Is, the wicketkeeper-batter’s place in India’s squad looks uncertain. The selectors are set to announce the team in Mumbai, but Shubman Gill recent form has sparked questions about Samson’s role.
Aakash Chopra’s take on selection dilemma
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra shared his views on his YouTube channel, highlighting the tricky situation. He explained that India might look to include Gill as a third opener. However, this would either push Samson down the order or even leave him out. Chopra said such a move “would not be a good story” given the faith shown in Samson as an opener.
Chopra added that Samson does not fit naturally in the middle order, where Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are likely to play. He pointed out that if Gill is picked in the XI, the selectors would face the difficult decision of leaving Samson out despite his strong performances.
Samson vs Gill: who fits better?
The debate has raised questions about India’s batting approach. Chopra noted that Yashasvi Jaiswal fits better into India’s aggressive template, while Gill’s natural style might not match the same destructive DNA. He also stressed that if Gill is included as an opener, it won’t be at Abhishek Sharma expense but Samson’s, making India’s recent investment in Samson look wasted.
With Samson’s IPL future also under speculation, his immediate focus will be on securing his spot for the Asia Cup. The final squad announcement is expected to provide clarity on whether the Kerala star keeps his opening role or faces disappointment.
