Sanju Samson Asia Cup 2025 Spot in Danger
Indian cricket team wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson batted at No. 5 for Kochi Blue Tigers in the Kerala Cricket League. This sparked debate on his role in the Asia Cup 2025 with Shubman Gill named as vice-captain. Fans believe Samson’s new batting position could hint at India’s middle-order plans.
Samson, usually a top-order batter, gave up his preferred slot to Vinoop Manoharan and Jobin Joby. For the national side, skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are expected at No. 3 and No. 4, while Abhishek Sharma will likely open. The second opening slot remains contested with Gill strengthening his claim after a fine run in England.
Ashwin Raises Concerns Over Samson’s Selection
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes Sanju Samson’s position in the playing XI is in “a bit of danger” after Gill’s elevation.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat, Ashwin stated:
“What will make me even more sad is that there are high chances that you have announced him as the vice-captain, so Sanju Samson’s place is in a bit of danger. The matter is sealed. Sanju is not going to play because Shubman Gill will play. If you want to play Gill, you have to play him at three, and Sanju will open the batting, but that too is not going to happen.”
Samson’s Numbers as an Opener
Despite the doubts, Samson has delivered consistent returns since the last T20 World Cup. In 31 T20 matches and 30 innings, he has scored 908 runs at an average of 33.62 and a strike rate of 157.09, with three centuries and three fifties. His strong form as an opener alongside Abhishek Sharma had revived his international career.
