Tendulkar Weighs in on Jadeja & Sundar's Standoff
The recent five-match Test series between India and England ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving fans with unforgettable moments. One such moment sparked intense debate: Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar continued batting even after England’s captain, Ben Stokes, initiated the handshake protocol on the final day of the fourth Test.
The Indian duo, both in the 80s, refused to settle for a draw and aimed for centuries after India had fought back from a daunting 311-run deficit. This decision left many divided, with some questioning if the Indian players acted in the right spirit. Others, however, criticized Stokes for pushing for a draw when Jadeja and Sundar were in the middle of a hard-fought battle.
Tendulkar Defends the Indian Duo’s Spirit and Intentions
Now, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has weighed in on the matter. In a candid post-series analysis, Tendulkar sharply criticized the way Stokes handled the situation. “Washington scored a hundred, and Jadeja scored a hundred. Why is it not in the right spirit? They were playing for a draw,” said Tendulkar in a Reddit video.
Tendulkar further emphasized, “Before that, they battled it out when England were having a go at them, and negotiated it all to bat brilliantly.” He continued, stating that the handshake was unnecessary as the series was alive, and it wasn’t India’s responsibility to ensure England’s bowlers were rested.
“The series was alive, so why should they go ahead (and shake hands) and give rest to England bowlers and fielders? If England wanted to hand the ball to Harry Brook, it was Ben Stokes’ choice. It wasn’t India’s problem,” he added.
Tendulkar’s Strong Support for India’s Players
Tendulkar stood firmly behind the Indian players, praising their efforts. “I am absolutely with the Indian team, be it Gambhir or Shubman or Jadeja or Washington, who decided. I’m 100 percent with them,” said Tendulkar. He also lauded Sundar for his brilliant approach when it was time to accelerate during the final Test at the Oval.
Tendulkar’s statements further highlight the spirit of competitive cricket, where the players’ focus remains on the game, regardless of outside influences. He praised the Indian players for their consistency and timely decisions under pressure.
