Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has officially retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the 2025 season, closing one of the most decorated careers in modern cricket. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star confirmed his decision on Wednesday, thanking the BCCI, IPL, and franchises for shaping his journey.
Ashwin shared his emotions on X, “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly, the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me.”
Final Stint with CSK in IPL 2025
Picked for Rs 9.75 crore at the 2025 mega auction, Ashwin played nine games for CSK this season. He took seven wickets but recorded his most expensive season, conceding runs at an economy of 9.13.
With 201 wickets in 239 matches, Ashwin retires as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. During his IPL career, he represented CSK, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
Retirement from International Cricket Before IPL Exit
Ashwin had already stepped away from the international stage in 2024. He announced his Test retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and confirmed his complete international retirement after the drawn third Test at Brisbane.
Across 106 Tests, he picked up 537 wickets at an average of 24.00, with 37 five-wicket hauls and eight 10-wicket match hauls. With the bat, he scored 3,503 runs, including six centuries. He also claimed 156 wickets in 116 ODIs and scored 707 runs. In total, Ashwin ended with 765 international wickets, India’s second-highest tally after Anil Kumble.
