Ramiz Raja Slams ICC’s Andy Pycroft for Bias Allegations
Former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja has strongly criticised ICC referee Andy Pycroft, accusing him of favouring India during the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai. His remarks follow the handshake controversy after Pakistan’s tense clash with India, which escalated into a major dispute.
Pakistan Squad Refused to Leave Hotel Before UAE Game
Before their must-win match against the UAE, Pakistan players stayed back at their hotel in protest. They demanded the removal of Andy Pycroft, delaying the start of the game by one hour. The PCB also cancelled the scheduled press conference.
Raja Raises Doubts Over ICC’s Neutrality
During a press conference with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Raja openly questioned Pycroft’s assignments.
“What’s interesting is… Andy Pycroft is favourite [for the Indians]. Whenever I host tosses, he’s always a permanent fixture over there,” Raja charged.
Raja added that Pycroft’s appointments appeared heavily tilted in India’s favour.
“This is something blatant for me because, though I thought he had refereed several matches, stats seemingly show something one-sided.
It should not be like this. This is a neutral platform, which is why there are referees and match officials. However, I felt that he was fixed there. But I hope that better sense prevails,” he said.
PCB Blames Pycroft for Handshake Row
According to the PCB, Pycroft stopped India captain Suryakumar Yadav and Pakistan skipper Salman Agha from shaking hands. The incident was later termed a “miscommunication.”
In a sharp statement on X, the board said:
“ICC’s controversial match referee Andy Pycroft has apologised to the manager and captain of the Pakistani cricket team… The ICC has expressed its readiness to investigate the violation of the Code of Conduct.”
ICC Denies Allegations, Clarifies Incident
ICC officials rejected Pakistan’s charges, stressing that no inquiry had been launched. They explained that Pycroft was not at fault and that an error by the venue manager led to confusion.
Despite Pakistan’s objections, Pycroft returned to officiate at the Dubai International Stadium for Pakistan’s game against the UAE. The issue continues to spark debate, keeping the Asia Cup 2025 in the spotlight for off-field drama as much as on-field action.
