Pat Cummins Slams Edgbaston Pitch After India Win
India’s emphatic 336-run victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston has sparked a wave of praise for the team — and criticism for the pitch. Australia captain Pat Cummins added his voice to the growing concerns, calling the surface a nightmare for bowlers.
Speaking after Australia’s win over West Indies in Grenada, Cummins didn’t hold back. “Who would even want to be a bowler over there?” he said, referring to the conditions at Edgbaston. “Test cricket over here and over there looks like two different sports.”
His comments followed England captain Ben Stokes’ own criticism, saying the pitch unexpectedly turned into a subcontinental surface by Day 4 and Day 5. Despite India’s win, questions continue to swirl around whether the surfaces being prepared for the series are fair contests between bat and ball.
Gill Questions Dukes’ Ball After Match-Winning Knock
India’s stand-in captain and Player of the Match, Shubman Gill, also voiced concern — not about the pitch, but the ball itself. Gill claimed the Dukes’ ball used in the match lost its shape and softness too quickly, offering no assistance to bowlers and making it difficult to create chances.
“It’s very difficult for the bowlers. The ball gets soft quickly, and there’s no help from the pitch either,” said Gill. “There should be something for the bowlers. That makes the game more balanced and more enjoyable.”
Criticism of flat pitches and unresponsive balls isn’t new, but the volume of concern from players across teams may push cricket authorities to review current standards. With the series now level at 1-1, the third Test at Lord’s beginning July 10 will be under intense scrutiny not only for the cricket but also for the conditions offered.
