Kohli-Rohit Equal Sachin-Dravid Record in Sydney ODI
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma etched their names in Indian cricket history during the Sydney ODI. The iconic pair matched Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid’s long-standing record for the most matches played together by an Indian duo.
Kohli stepped out for his 305th ODI, while Rohit featured in his 276th. Together, they reached 391 joint appearances across formats — a feat that equals the mark set by Tendulkar and Dravid between 1996 and 2012.
Two Legends, One Journey
Rohit Sharma’s debut in 2007 came a year before Kohli’s first ODI in 2008. Rohit was already part of the squad when Kohli walked in for his maiden game. Over time, they grew into India’s batting backbone across formats. Their T20I journey concluded on a high after their joint retirement post the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
Kohli–Rohit Breakdown:
Tests: 60 matches
ODIs: 225 matches
T20Is: 106 matches
Tendulkar–Dravid Breakdown:
Tests: 146 matches
ODIs: 245 matches
Sachin-Dravid’s Golden Era
Sachin Tendulkar made his debut in 1989, long before Rahul Dravid’s first appearance in 1996. Tendulkar was already in the XI when Rahul Dravid began his journey. Their final match together came in 2012. Dravid bowed out after the 2011/12 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Tendulkar carried on till 2013.
The duo’s T20I exposure was minimal — Tendulkar featured once in 2006, Dravid once in 2011.
World Record Still With Sri Lanka
While Kohli and Rohit now share India’s top spot with Tendulkar and Dravid, the overall world record remains with Sri Lankan greats Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara. They appeared together in an extraordinary 550 matches.
Kohli and Rohit’s ODI Road Ahead
The series in Australia has added uncertainty around their ODI future. Kohli endured a rare slump, registering consecutive ducks in Perth and Adelaide. Rohit’s form improved in the second ODI, where his gritty 73 anchored India’s 264 after early dismissals of Kohli and Shubman Gill.
Despite his knock, India fell short by two wickets. If they lose again in Sydney, this could mark their first-ever ODI whitewash against Australia.
