Kane Williamson Calls Kohli Greatest Since 2010
New Zealand star Kane Williamson has settled a long-running debate in world cricket by declaring Virat Kohli as the greatest all-format player of the last 15 years. In an interview with Sky Sports, the former Kiwi captain reflected on Kohli’s impact on global cricket and their own bond that extends beyond the pitch.
“Virat is probably the greatest all-format player we’ve seen in the last 15 years,” Williamson said. He highlighted the immense pressure Kohli has dealt with while playing in a cricket-obsessed country like India and still delivering consistent performances across formats.
Williamson also downplayed any personal rivalry between the two, saying, “It wasn’t really a competitive thing. You’re just in the team and you want to compete as a team.” Their relationship, he noted, has grown through shared experiences in life and cricket over the years.
Kohli’s Legacy and the Parallel Journey with Williamson
The 33-year-old also spoke about their personal connection. “It’s quite funny, just a full circle. We’re not just playing cricket, but living lives in parallel in many ways,” he added. Their journey as elite athletes, leaders, and now elder statesmen in the game has kept them close, even off the field.
Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket in May this year, capping off a storied red-ball career. Meanwhile, Williamson remains active in all formats, though he has stepped down from white-ball captaincy and opted out of New Zealand’s central contracts to manage his workload.
As India continues its Test series against England at Lord’s, Kohli is currently based in London. The series stands level at 1-1, with Shubman Gill shining in Kohli’s former No. 4 spot. Gill has already scored three centuries in five innings, including a double hundred in the second Test, keeping India’s middle-order strong even in Kohli’s absence.
