Karsan Ghavri slams Tendulkar over Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy
Former India all-rounder Karsan Ghavri has openly criticised Sachin Tendulkar for not taking a stronger stance against the decision to rename the Pataudi Trophy as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He called the move “degrading” to the legacy of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, a figure closely tied to the contest for decades.
Ghavri Compares With Other Iconic Cricket Trophies
“That is very wrong. Number one, the Australia-West Indies series is always called the Frank Worrell Trophy. The India–Australia Trophy is always called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If its name changed, Gavaskar poore India ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar will shake the whole of India),” Ghavri told Vicky Lalwani on his YouTube channel.
He also blamed the BCCI for allowing the change without resistance. “The BCCI should’ve put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB. Tiger’s name shouldn’t have been removed,” said Ghavri.
Criticism of Tendulkar’s Initial Objection
While Tendulkar did initially raise objections, Ghavri argued that it wasn’t enough.
The former cricketer explained, “In the same context, when officials planned to change the trophy and name it after Sachin Tendulkar and Anderson, Sachin should have said no. Objecting is different.”
“In the first place, you should’ve put your foot down and should’ve said ‘No, I don’t want to use my name because Tiger Pataudi’s name is already there. He’s a legend of Indian cricket. If you want to give medals, use our name. Trophy’s name should remain the same’.”
He added, “First of all, no one should have raised this question.”You’re degrading somebody of a great stature.”
Thrilling Start to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy
The first series under the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy banner produced some memorable cricket. Shubman Gill, captaining for the first time, amassed 754 runs in five Tests, while Mohammed Siraj topped the wicket charts with 23 scalps in nine innings.
