Gavaskar Slams India After Collapse vs England
Rain and poor light stopped play on Day 4 of the final Test between India and England at The Oval, with England needing just 35 runs to win and seal a 3-1 series victory. India, who need four wickets (three if Chris Woakes doesn’t bat due to injury), find themselves once again on the brink of a disappointing loss despite posting a solid total of 374 runs.
India’s innings was boosted by a brilliant century from Yashasvi Jaiswal, along with gritty fifties from Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. Yet, just like earlier in the series, the visitors failed to hold on to their winning positions. In all matches, India had moments of dominance, only to let England recover and snatch the momentum.
Gavaskar Says ‘Results Matter, Not Sessions’
Speaking on Sony Sports Network, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar delivered a stinging verdict on India’s performance in the five-match series. “Overall, if you add up all the games, it’s a bit like that—one team has won more games, the other more sets,” Gavaskar said. He added that unless India wins the final Test and levels the series, it’s clear England are the superior side. “It doesn’t matter how many sessions you’ve won,” he stressed.
England’s comeback on Day 4 was powered by a strong partnership between Harry Brook and Joe Root. Brook missed his century after miscuing a shot, while Root completed his hundred but was soon dismissed by Prasidh Krishna. Jacob Bethell also fell while trying to attack, giving India a slim chance heading into Day 5. With fresh bowlers and favorable conditions expected, India will hope for a miracle to avoid another painful collapse.
