Dhruv Jurel Hits Maiden Test Century in Ahmedabad
Dhruv Jurel carved out a special chapter in Indian cricket by scoring his maiden Test century against West Indies in Ahmedabad, becoming only the 12th Indian wicketkeeper to reach the milestone. His brilliant knock on the second day of the opening Test on Friday further established his rising stature in the longest format.
Having narrowly missed the landmark against England last year, Jurel showed remarkable composure on 99. He reached the three-figure mark in style, whipping a delivery wide of mid-on from Roston Chase to the boundary. His unique celebration, holding the bat upright and shifting it to his left, puzzled many spectators. The Indian dressing room stood up together and applauded his remarkable effort. Ravindra Jadeja, standing at the other end, also joined in the applause.
Historic Milestone Against the Caribbean Side
At just 24, Jurel became the fifth Indian wicketkeeper to hit a maiden Test hundred against West Indies. He joined an exclusive list featuring Vijay Manjrekar, Farokh Engineer, Ajay Ratra, and Wriddhiman Saha. His hundred was the third by a designated Indian wicketkeeper in 2025, the most in a single year. It is also the joint second-highest total by any team in a calendar year after South Africa’s four in 2013.
Late Acceleration and Eventual Dismissal
Dhruv Jurel shifted gears towards the end of the day, finding gaps with sweeps, cuts, and drives before clearing the ropes with a massive six down the ground. His impressive stay came to an end when debutant Khary Pierre induced an outside edge that was caught by Shai Hope. Pierre celebrated his maiden Test wicket, while Jurel walked back to warm applause from the stands.
Jadeja’s Century and India’s Dominance
The 206-run stand between Jurel and vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja provided India with complete control of the innings. Jadeja later brought up his century with his trademark bat-sword celebration, marking the third instance in 2025 of three Indian players scoring hundreds in a single Test innings.
Jadeja’s assault included five sixes off Jomel Warrican, equalling the second-most hit by an Indian batter against one bowler in a Test innings — behind only MS Dhoni’s six maximums off Dave Mohammad in 2006. By stumps, India were cruising at 448/5 in 128 overs, holding a commanding 286-run lead over the visitors.
