Chris Gayle Slams Mulder for Declaring on 367*
Wiaan Mulder’s decision to declare South Africa’s innings at 367 not out, just 33 runs shy of Brian Lara’s legendary 400*, has sparked major controversy in the cricket world. Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle, who has scored two triple centuries in Test cricket, said Mulder panicked and blundered by not chasing the record.
Mulder’s knock against Zimbabwe was the highest individual score by a South African batter, surpassing Hashim Amla’s 311*. It also placed him fifth on the list of all-time highest scores in Test history. His innings was the fastest triple century by a South African and the second-fastest ever in Test cricket.
Despite this achievement, many fans and former players, including Gayle, questioned his decision to declare. Gayle said such a chance comes once in a lifetime. “You’re on 367. How are you going to become a legend if you don’t take that chance? He blew it big time,” Gayle stated.
‘He Panicked and Blundered’: Gayle Questions Mulder’s Call
Mulder explained he spoke with South Africa’s head coach, who advised him to leave such records to the legends. However, Gayle did not agree with that approach. He said that legends are made by chasing such big milestones, and it doesn’t matter who the opposition is.
“You can score 400 against anyone, that’s Test cricket,” Gayle said. “Sometimes, scoring even one run is hard. That was an error. He panicked and blundered.”
Despite the missed record, Mulder led South Africa to a dominant win. His unbeaten 367, three wickets, and a catch helped South Africa beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 236 runs. Still, the cricket world will long debate whether Mulder missed his shot at becoming a legend.
