Bumrah Released for 5th Test Asia Cup or WI Series Next
Jasprit Bumrah will not feature in the fifth and final Test against England. The BCCI announced on Friday that the Indian pace spearhead had completed his planned stint of three Tests in the five-match series. This move has sparked discussions about Bumrah’s next international appearance — the Asia Cup T20 or the upcoming Test series against West Indies.
The 31-year-old bowled 119.4 overs across three Tests, picking up 14 wickets. He grabbed five-wicket hauls at Headingley and Lord’s. However, he had a rare off day at Manchester, giving away over 100 runs in a single innings for the first time in his Test career. Bumrah now holds 219 wickets in 48 Tests.
“Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India’s squad for the fifth Test of the series against England,” the BCCI stated.
Before the series began, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had already said that Bumrah wouldn’t play more than three Tests, due to workload management.
What’s Next for Bumrah: Asia Cup or Tests?
India’s next challenge is the Asia Cup T20, followed just days later by the West Indies Test series. The Asia Cup ends on September 29, while the first Test vs West Indies begins on October 2 in Ahmedabad, with the second in New Delhi from October 10–14. India also faces South Africa in two home Tests in November.
This tight schedule makes Bumrah’s availability a tricky decision. “It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup,” a BCCI source told PTI.
If Bumrah plays the Asia Cup final, he would have almost no recovery time before the West Indies Test in Ahmedabad.
“If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies or he plays Asia Cup after a month’s break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take,” the source added.
Focus Shifts to T20 World Cup
The selectors are likely to rest Bumrah from ODIs leading up to the 2026 T20 World Cup. He may instead play the T20I series against New Zealand in January, which will serve as a warm-up for the mega event.
As selectors weigh options between formats and player workload, fans eagerly wait to see where Jasprit Bumrah will make his next appearance — the Asia Cup or the West Indies Tests.
