Bhuvneshwar Kumar Backs Jasprit Bumrah’s England Test
Senior Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has backed Jasprit Bumrah workload management during the England Test series, defending the star pacer from recent criticism. Several former cricketers, including Mohammad Azharuddin and Dilip Vengsarkar, had questioned Bumrah for missing the decisive fifth Test at The Oval.
Before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy began, chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced that Bumrah would play only three of the five Tests. The plan aimed to preserve his fitness across formats. Bumrah featured in three matches, taking 14 wickets, but India failed to win any of them. However, the team, led by Shubman Gill, clinched the fifth Test to level the series 2-2.
Bhuvneshwar Explains Why Bumrah’s Plan Makes Sense
Speaking on the Cricket Stories Podcast, Bhuvneshwar explained why such a plan is necessary.
“Considering how many years Bumrah has been playing and competing in all formats, it is tough for anyone to sustain that. Given the kind of bowling action Bumrah has, injuries can happen to him or anyone. I had no problem with him playing three out of five matches,” Bhuvneshwar said.
He further added:
“If the selectors know what he can offer and are comfortable with it, it is because they know he can still make a big impact in those three games. If a player might not play all five matches but can contribute significantly in three, that should be acceptable – people do not always understand how tough it is to keep playing for so many years across formats.
There is pressure as well. If you want someone to play for long, you have to manage him well. So, I did not have any problem.”
Critics Suggest IPL Break Instead of Missing Tests
Vengsarkar, speaking to The Times of India, suggested skipping the IPL instead of two crucial Tests. Despite the criticism, Bumrah’s absence in the final Test did not stop India from securing a memorable win.
Mohammed Siraj led the bowling attack with 22 wickets in all five matches, showcasing tireless effort. According to reports, Bumrah will return for the Asia Cup T20 starting 9 September, with his availability for the 2025-26 home Tests yet to be confirmed. India will face the West Indies from 2 October, followed by South Africa in November.
