BCCI to Focus on Jasprit Bumrah’s Fitness for ICC Tournaments
Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness continues to be a major concern for the Indian team management and the BCCI. During India’s recent five-match Test series against England, Bumrah played only three Tests. This was done to manage his workload. Now, the BCCI is considering further reducing his game time to protect his fitness and ensure he’s ready for crucial matches, especially in ICC tournaments and major series.
BCCI’s Strategy to Protect Bumrah for Major ICC Tournaments
As reported by The Indian Express, the Indian team management is “unanimous” in its decision to prioritize Bumrah’s long-term fitness. The main goal is to keep him fit for key ICC tournaments, particularly the T20 World Cup 2026. The BCCI aims to ensure Bumrah remains available for these important events.
“Bumrah’s availability for ICC tournaments and other key series is crucial,” a source within the BCCI said. Bumrah had back surgery earlier this year, which kept him out for a while after playing all five Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.
Bumrah’s Absence in Tests Boosts the Management’s Confidence
The decision to limit Bumrah’s game time was reinforced by India’s success in the two Tests he missed in England. In his absence, pacers like Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna delivered strong performances. Siraj took 23 wickets in five Tests, while Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna claimed 13 and 14 wickets, respectively, in three Tests. This success gave the management confidence that they could manage Bumrah’s workload effectively.
“The medical staff is also involved. When a player like Bumrah—who can win games on his own—is available, everything is being done to protect him,” said a BCCI source.
Bumrah’s Commitment and BCCI’s Cautionary Approach
Bumrah has expressed his willingness to contribute across all formats. However, the BCCI’s medical team has cautioned about using him too much to avoid further injuries. Their goal is to ensure his long-term fitness.
Focus on Bumrah’s Fitness for the Future
To sum up, the BCCI’s main priority is keeping Bumrah fit for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The team will carefully manage his workload and health to maintain his ability to perform at the highest level.
