BCCI Demands Asia Cup Trophy Back Amid Growing Row
The long-simmering Asia Cup trophy controversy has now turned into a direct confrontation between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi. Days after India’s title win, Naqvi — who also chairs the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) — is still keeping the trophy and winners’ medals locked in his Dubai hotel room. This continues despite repeated demands from BCCI officials.
BCCI Warns of ICC Action Over Trophy Dispute
During a virtual ACC meeting, senior BCCI members Rajiv Shukla and Ashish Shelar pressed Naqvi to return the trophy. They insisted it should first go to the ACC headquarters and then to the Indian team.
“Shukla and Shelar argued that the ACC should keep the trophy in the office and BCCI would get it collected. They said ‘we want the trophy as legitimate winners.’ Naqvi was passing the buck but not saying no at the same time,” a BCCI source revealed.
Frustrated by the deadlock, the BCCI warned it was ready to escalate the issue beyond the ACC. Officials stressed that the trophy belongs to the winning team and not to any individual.
“It was made clear that the BCCI will complain to the ICC and Shelar briefly left the meeting,” the source said. “Shukla and Shelar categorically said that the trophy should be handed over to the winning team. It is an ACC trophy and doesn’t belong to an individual. Naqvi did not say no to it, he was passing the buck,” the source added.
Naqvi Cites Humiliation During Trophy Presentation
Mohsin Naqvi, however, expressed anger over the Indian players’ refusal to accept the trophy directly from him during the post-final ceremony. He claimed the incident left him humiliated.
“He arrived on the ceremony podium, hoping to hand over the medals and trophy to Suryakumar Yadav and his team, but was made to look ‘like a cartoon,’” the report stated.
The PCB chief suggested that the topic should be handled separately and not during the ACC Annual General Meeting. That meeting, which was supposed to finalise a new Vice-Chairman, ended without any conclusion due to the ongoing standoff.
A Battle Beyond the Boundary
Neither side is showing signs of compromise, turning the trophy dispute into a power struggle at the top of Asian cricket. What began as a ceremonial disagreement has now overshadowed India’s on-field triumph.
