R Ashwin Says Pant Not Gilchrist But Among Best Batters
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on Rishabh Pant’s batting style, urging him to find the right balance between aggression and restraint. Pant, known for his fearless stroke play, has become a key figure in India’s Test squad. His performances in overseas conditions, especially in SENA countries, have made him one of the most dependable players for India in recent years.
Pant’s recent form has been outstanding. He scored twin centuries at Headingley, becoming the second wicketkeeper after Andy Flower to achieve this feat. Ashwin also addressed the often-repeated comparison between Rishabh Pant and Australian legend Adam Gilchrist. While acknowledging Pant’s explosive style, Ashwin pointed out that Pant brings more defensive strength to the crease.
“He is not Adam Gilchrist. People often compare them, but Pant has a much better defensive game. Gilchrist didn’t have that kind of solid defense. Pant should be compared with top batters, not just wicketkeepers,” Ashwin explained.
Pant has also reached a historic milestone by becoming the first Asian wicketkeeper-batter to score over 2,000 Test runs in SENA nations. With his blend of flair, power, and now growing maturity, Ashwin believes Pant can create his own legacy and not be seen as a copy of someone else.
