Ashwin Criticizes Agarkar Over Shreyas Iyer’s Exclusion
Ravichandran Ashwin has openly criticized the decision to exclude Shreyas Iyer from India’s Asia Cup squad, calling it unfair and unjust. Ashwin took to his YouTube channel to express his views on Iyer’s omission, even questioning the logic behind not including him in the reserve list. The All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee announced the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, with Suryakumar Yadav named as captain. However, Iyer’s exclusion, despite his excellent form, has raised eyebrows.
Iyer has been in outstanding form recently, playing crucial roles for both Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, and making important contributions during India’s victorious campaign in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Ashwin pointed out that Iyer’s absence from the squad is even more baffling considering his consistent performances in T20Is, where he has been an essential player.
Ashwin Defends Shreyas Iyer and Critiques Team Management
Ashwin emphasized that Iyer’s impressive performances and leadership should have warranted his inclusion in the Asia Cup squad. He stated that Iyer had proven his ability to handle pressure, especially in difficult conditions like those in the IPL, where he conquered challenges like the short-ball problem.
“Shreyas Iyer has solid credentials. He made you win the Champions Trophy. If Shubman Gill is in great form, Shreyas is also in fine form,” Ashwin said, highlighting that Iyer’s contributions should not be overlooked. Ashwin also expressed his disappointment, calling the decision extremely unfair, especially in light of the hard work Iyer has put in to prove himself.
Despite Ashwin’s criticism, Ajit Agarkar defended the selection decision, stating that the team management had to make tough choices for the squad balance. “With regards to Shreyas, you need to tell him who he can replace. There’s no fault of his; it’s just that we have to pick 15,” Agarkar explained.
