Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has applauded Shubman Gill for staying true to himself both on and off the field, especially in his new role as India’s Test captain. Ashwin highlighted that Gill, unlike many others, doesn’t rehearse media-friendly responses but speaks with sincerity and calmness.
Shubman took over the Test captaincy after Rohit Sharma and is already making headlines with his leadership and batting brilliance. Despite early doubts about his overseas Test form, he has bounced back with dominant performances in the ongoing series against England.
Gill’s Calm Demeanor at Press Conferences Stands Out
Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, emphasized how Gill remains unaffected by media pressure, a common tactic used during overseas tours to target captains. He praised the 25-year-old for being composed and confident during press conferences, describing his style as refreshingly real.
“Shubman has a natural flair. I was watching his press conference, and I immediately felt he wasn’t acting. He speaks like he is. He is leading the team based on his instincts and staying true to who he is,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin noted that many players are trained to manage the media, but that doesn’t seem to apply to Gill. “Don’t take it out of context, but a lot of players are coached about what to say. Shubman doesn’t look like one of them. He believes in his way, and it shows,” he added.
Gill Answers Critics with Dominant Show in England
Shubman Gill was under scrutiny for his red-ball record abroad but silenced his critics within just two Tests. He began with a composed 147 at Headingley and followed it up with a magnificent 269 in the first innings at Edgbaston. This marked his maiden Test double century and made him the first Indian captain to do so in England.
Adding to his incredible run, Gill scored another 161 in the second innings at Edgbaston, making him only the third Indian batter to achieve a double hundred in England and solidifying his place as a powerful presence in the Test arena.
