Akash Deep Reflects on England Tour with Haul and Fifty
Indian pacer Akash Deep reflected on his impressive England tour, where he combined grit and skill to deliver match-winning performances. From his 10-wicket haul at Edgbaston to a determined fifty at The Oval, the Bengal fast bowler showed resilience in testing conditions. Speaking to CNN-News18 Cricketnext, Akash also discussed his rivalry with Ben Duckett, Morne Morkel’s guidance, Shubman Gill’s captaincy, and Mohammed Siraj’s impact.
Memories From Edgbaston and The Oval
Akash Deep began the tour on a high with a 10-wicket haul at Edgbaston, despite unhelpful conditions. “When I actually went there and saw the wickets and the conditions myself, it was very different… Because there was no swing, no seam movement, runs were flowing freely. But I told myself: the only thing in my control is to put the ball in the right areas.”
Later, at The Oval, he produced a gritty fifty as night-watchman despite carrying a niggle. “I wasn’t even looking at the runs. But as I survived ball after ball, the runs started adding up. And that’s how that fifty came—it was built purely on patience and focus.”
On Rivalries and Bumrah’s Role
Akash enjoyed his on-field battles, especially against Ben Duckett. “Yes, he was my target. I had already dismissed him four or five times… but eventually, I did get him out again.” Addressing talk that India won in Bumrah’s absence, he disagreed: “Bumrah bhai has won countless matches for India with his bowling… Whenever he has played, he’s always given match-winning performances for the team.”
Morne Morkel’s Guidance and Gill’s Captaincy
The pacer credited bowling coach Morne Morkel for keeping things simple. “The best thing about him is that he keeps things simple. He knows exactly what each bowler’s strengths are, and then he just focuses on small technical adjustments where required.” He also praised skipper Shubman Gill. “He has a lot of good ideas, he’s very calm, he understands situations, and he doesn’t react impulsively. For us players, that’s a very good sign.”
Lessons From Tours and Siraj’s Energy
Playing consecutive series in Australia and England, Akash realised the importance of mental and physical strength. “These places teach you that skill alone won’t work. You have to be mentally and physically strong enough to bowl for five days straight.” He admired Mohammed Siraj’s tireless energy: “The way he bowled across all five matches—you never once felt like this guy was tiring. Even after bowling so many overs, he still comes back with the same intensity.” Akash also shared his spiritual side, saying temple visits give him peace of mind, and confirmed he will resume bowling soon after recovering from a minor niggle.
