Abhimanyu Easwaran’s Long Wait for India Test Debut
Abhimanyu Easwaran is still waiting to wear the India whites. Since his selection for the 2022 Bangladesh tour, 15 other players have debuted in Test cricket, but Easwaran has remained on the sidelines.
He joined the squad in December 2022 after Rohit Sharma injury but didn’t make the playing XI. Even during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, he couldn’t break into the team, with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal occupying the top-order spots.
Ganguly Sees Easwaran as a Possible No. 3
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes Easwaran could soon be tested at the No. 3 position, given India’s ongoing search for stability there.
“He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance,” Ganguly said in a quote published by the Times of India.
“I feel batters like Yashasvi (Jaiswal), KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja have all got runs. It’s only the No. 3 slot that has looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried out there,” he added.
Father Questions Selection Decisions During Four-Year Bench Stint
Easwaran’s father, Ranganathan, expressed frustration over his son’s prolonged wait. He pointed to assurances given by coach Gautam Gambhir.
“Gautam Gambhir told my son, ‘You’re doing the right kind of things. You’ll get your turn and a long run. I’m not the kind who will drop you after one or two matches.’ That’s what my son communicated to me,” Ranganathan said in an interview on Vickey Lalwani’s YouTube channel.
He added that the coaching staff gave similar assurances. “They all said he’ll get his due. He has put in 23 years of hard work and has been waiting for 4 years now.”
Ranganathan also questioned the decision to pick Sai Sudharsan at one-down during the England Tests.
“He should have played at No. 3. There’s no question. No ill feelings for Sai Sudharsan, but where does he fit in? 0, 30, 61, 0 — those were his scores in the Leeds and Manchester Tests. They could have tried Abhimanyu,” he argued.
“Abhimanyu has played around 30% of his matches at Eden Gardens — a green track. He has experience on such surfaces and is known to hold the innings together. The records speak for themselves.”
