Suryakumar Yadav to Lead India’s Asia Cup Squad 2025
The BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, plans to announce India’s Asia Cup squad around August 19 or 20, depending on medical updates from the Sports Science team at the Centre of Excellence. Suryakumar Yadav, who recently resumed batting practice in Bengaluru, is likely to captain the team in this important tournament.
The selectors aim to maintain a stable lineup with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya expected to form the top order. A BCCI insider told PTI, “Abhishek Sharma is the world’s No. 1 T20 batter in the latest ICC rankings. Sanju Samson delivered a fantastic season with both bat and gloves. Still, considering Shubman Gill’s form—even in Tests—makes this a tough call.”
Tough Choices in the Batting Order
With multiple in-form batters, the selectors face a challenge in finalizing the top order. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan also remain strong contenders. Although KL Rahul remains India’s preferred ODI wicketkeeper, his recent batting position outside the middle order could hurt his chances in the T20 format.
Sanju Samson is likely to retain the primary wicketkeeper’s role. For the second wicketkeeper slot, selectors will likely choose between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jitesh stood out as a finisher during RCB’s IPL-winning campaign, while Jurel played in India’s recent T20I series.
Bowling Options and Fitness Updates
Hardik Pandya continues to be India’s premier seam-bowling all-rounder. With Nitish Kumar Reddy recovering from an injury sustained during the England tour, his participation seems unlikely. Shivam Dube, thanks to his recent strong performances, has improved his chances of selection.
In the spin department, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are expected to handle the spin all-rounder duties. Among wrist spinners, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are strong contenders.
The pace attack features Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh as confirmed picks. For the third pacer spot, the selectors are considering Prasidh Krishna, who picked up 25 wickets in the IPL, and Harshit Rana, who impressed with his pace and bounce.
