_Azharuddin Declares Syed Kirmani the Best Wicketkeeper Ever
Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has described Syed Kirmani as the best wicketkeeper in the world, highlighting his remarkable skill and vital role in the 1983 World Cup victory. Azharuddin shared his admiration while attending the launch of Kirmani’s autobiography, Stumped, in Telangana.
Speaking to ANI, Azhar said, “He is the number one wicket-keeper in the world. Such a wicket-keeper was never born. It was not easy for him to do wicketkeeping with four spinners. He took many good catches in the World Cup in 1983.”
Azhar also praised Kirmani’s batting contributions in the historic tournament. “Even in the match when Kapil Dev scored 175 runs (against Zimbabwe), he scored crucial 24 runs. I am very happy to attend this event today. May god give him a long life. People should also read this book and enjoy, and I hope it is successful,” he added.
Career Milestones and 1983 World Cup Impact
Kirmani played for India between 1976 and 1986, featuring in 88 Tests and 49 ODIs. In Tests, he accumulated 2,759 runs at an average of 27.04, scoring two centuries and 12 fifties. Behind the stumps, he completed 160 catches and 38 stumpings.
In ODIs, Kirmani scored 373 runs, took 27 catches, and made nine stumpings. During the 1983 World Cup, he was outstanding with 14 dismissals, including 12 catches and two stumpings, finishing second only to Jeff Dujon of West Indies. With 234 total international dismissals, Kirmani remains fourth on India’s all-time wicketkeeper list, behind Rishabh Pant, Nayan Mongia, and MS Dhoni.
Azharuddin urged aspiring wicketkeepers to learn from Kirmani’s dedication and flawless technique. He also commended Hyderabad pacer Mohammed Siraj for his brilliant bowling in the 2-2 Test series draw against England, where Siraj claimed 23 wickets.
“I also got a chance to meet Siraj. He bowled very well today. I would like to congratulate him as well. I hope he continues to grow and perform well,” Azhar concluded.
