Trescothick on Duckett vs Akash Deep in 5th Test
England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick shared his views on the Ben Duckett vs Akash Deep moment during Day 2 of the India vs England 5th Test at The Oval. The exchange, a mix of banter and celebration, has become one of the key talking points of the match.
During the first session, Ben Duckett tried to unsettle Akash Deep by saying, “You cannot get me out in here.” In response, Akash stayed silent. Duckett followed up with a reverse ramp shot that thrilled the English crowd.
But Akash Deep soon had his reply. He dismissed Duckett for 43 runs off 38 balls, caught behind by Dhruv Jurel. Akash celebrated with a fist pump, then wrapped his arm around Duckett’s shoulder and exchanged a few friendly words.
Trescothick: “Put Your Head Down and Walk Off”
Trescothick addressed the incident in a press conference and suggested Duckett should have exited more quietly.“I was just saying, many in my time, a lot of players, would have just dropped the elbow on him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bowler do that after getting someone out. You see, he obviously has many words, and we’ve seen it within the series on both sides, but it was just different. You put your head down and walk off. Your job is done at that point. There’s probably no need to sort of walk him off in that fashion,” Trescothick told the media.
“No Need to Change Test Rules,” Says Trescothick
He also responded to questions about substitutes for injured players. England lost Chris Woakes due to a shoulder injury before Day 2. Trescothick believes Test cricket is fine as it is.
“Test matches are test matches, and I think you don’t need to adjust too much. I like to think we’re producing some good cricket around the world in every test-playing nation. I don’t think we should try and mess with it too much. The rules have been in place for many, many years. And they’ve done just fine in the past, so I wouldn’t be changing anything at the moment.”
Speaking on the match situation, he added: “It’s pretty evenly poised, I guess at the moment, plenty of wickets in the course of today, but the game is moving forward pretty quickly, and who knows what tomorrow will bring. I think you’ll see the pitch probably continuing to be lively and more seam movement as the day goes on.”
India Take Slim Lead After Bowling Collapse
At stumps on Day 2, India were 75/2 with Yashasvi Jaiswal unbeaten on 51 and Akash Deep on 4. India now lead by 52 runs. Earlier, England were dismissed for 247 in reply to India’s 224.
Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj took four wickets each. Their efforts triggered a collapse and denied England a big lead. The final session began with England at 215/7. Harry Brook was batting on 33 with Gus Atkinson at the crease.
While the Duckett vs Akash Deep moment stole the spotlight, the Test remains finely balanced heading into Day 3.
