AB de Villiers Stars in Last-Ball Win for SA Legends
AB de Villiers showed the world he still has it. The 41-year-old South African legend rolled back the years with a dramatic last-ball fielding effort that helped South Africa Champions beat Australia by one run in the WCL 2025 semifinal at Edgbaston.
Needing three runs off the final delivery, Dan Christian faced Wayne Parnell with Nathan Coulter-Nile at the non-striker’s end. Christian squeezed the ball to long-on and attempted a desperate second run. But AB de Villiers sprinted in, collected cleanly, and fired a direct hit at the stumps. Coulter-Nile was well short, ending Australia’s hopes and sending South Africa to the final against Pakistan
De Villiers Dominates with Bat and in the Field
De Villiers, who is leading the South African team, has been in sensational form throughout the World Championship of Legends. Despite not contributing with the bat in the semifinal, his two centuries and over 300 runs so far put him comfortably at the top of the tournament’s run-scoring charts. His performances have stood out not just with the bat, but also in the field, where his reflexes and agility have stunned fans.
Earlier in the semifinal, South Africa posted 186/8, thanks to a blistering knock from JJ Smuts (76 off 35) and a solid hand by Morne van Wyk. Australia looked strong in their chase, with openers Chris Lynn and Shaun Marsh giving them a flying start. However, Wayne Parnell’s crucial breakthroughs and tight final over sealed the deal.
South Africa now face an unbeaten Pakistan side in the final. With AB de Villiers leading from the front, the Proteas legends will hope to cap off a thrilling tournament with the WCL 2025 title.
