Shastri Supports Sundar Over Kuldeep for 4th Test
As India heads into a must-win fourth Test against England in Manchester, the debate over Kuldeep Yadav’s exclusion continues to stir cricket circles. Despite calls from experts to include the wrist-spinner in the playing XI, former India coach Ravi Shastri has instead thrown his support behind Gautam Gambhir’s preferred choice—Washington Sundar.
Kuldeep was considered a strong pick at the start of the series and after the loss in Leeds, but the team management, under Gambhir’s influence, opted to go with Sundar. The decision seemed to pay off, with Sundar scoring 77 runs and claiming five wickets in two Tests. Shastri, speaking on The ICC Review, described Sundar as a future all-round star for India. He recalled spotting his talent early and believes Sundar can play a major role in Indian cricket for years to come.
Shastri Says Sundar Is No. 6 Material
Washington Sundar made his Test debut in India’s historic win at Gabba in 2021. Despite his strong performance, including a memorable six off Pat Cummins and several gritty knocks, injuries limited his appearances. In just 11 Tests, he has scored 545 runs and taken 30 wickets.
Shastri pointed out that Sundar’s ability with both bat and ball makes him more than a lower-order player. He believes the 25-year-old could be promoted to bat at No. 6, especially considering his average of 38.92 and standout innings like 85* and 96* against England.
Sundar’s potential to dominate on turning Indian tracks, as he did against New Zealand by picking up 16 wickets in four innings, only strengthens Shastri’s argument. With his strong endorsement, Sundar may retain his spot, leaving Kuldeep waiting once again.
