Ganguly Slams India’s Top Order After Lord’s Defeat (1)
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his disappointment with India’s batting performance after their 22-run defeat to England in the third Test at Lord’s. Chasing a target of 193, India collapsed to 170 all out, with Ravindra Jadeja (61*) and KL Rahul (39) being the only players to offer resistance. No other batter crossed 20, raising concerns about the mindset and performance of the top order under pressure.
Speaking at an event on Tuesday, Ganguly said the team should have been able to chase down the target, especially considering the strength of their batting lineup. “I’m a little disappointed. With the way India has batted in this series, they should have been able to get to 190. When you saw Jadeja fight and score runs, with the quality of batting in this team, they will be more disappointed than I am,” Ganguly shared.
He also emphasized that if even a small contribution had come from the top order, India would have won. “If there had been any fight from the top, this game would have been India’s,” he added.
Jadeja Praised for His Fight as Others Struggle
While the top order failed, Ravindra Jadeja once again proved to be India’s standout performer. Ganguly praised the all-rounder, calling him a special player who continues to improve. “Jadeja has been exceptional. As long as he bats and performs like this, he will continue playing for India. He’s a special player and an important part of this team,” Ganguly said.
Jadeja, with over 80 Test matches and more than 200 ODIs to his name, stood firm during India’s collapse and almost pulled off a late rescue. However, the lack of support from the rest of the batting lineup left him stranded.
Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir also voiced his frustration over the poor performance of other all-rounders. Washington Sundar was dismissed for a duck, and Nitish Kumar Reddy managed only 13 from 53 balls.
With the series now at 2-1 in favor of England, India will need to regroup and rework their batting strategy ahead of the crucial fourth Test in Manchester.
