Gavaskar blames IPL gap for Gill-Crawley clash (1)
Day 3 of the Lord’s Test between India and England ended with tempers flaring. Shubman Gill, leading India, lost his cool during England’s second innings. The incident began when Zak Crawley stepped away multiple times before facing a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. Soon after, Crawley was hit on the glove and called for medical attention, delaying the game.
Frustrated, Gill had a verbal exchange with Crawley and Ben Duckett. He followed it up with a sarcastic clap directed at the England dressing room. Moments later, Bumrah bowled a seaming delivery that beat Crawley to close the day’s play on a tense note.
Gavaskar Says IPL Absence Fuels On-Field Friction
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar offered his take on the incident. He said the tension may have stemmed from the lack of England players in the IPL. Speaking on air, Gavaskar noted that top English names like Ben Stokes and Joe Root didn’t play in IPL 2024.
He pointed out that players from other countries have grown closer to Indian players through the IPL, often sharing dressing rooms and forming friendships. In contrast, limited interaction with England players might be causing more on-field clashes, like the one involving Gill.
At stumps, England were 2/0 in their second innings. Both teams scored 387 in the first innings. KL Rahul made a century, while Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja played key roles with the bat. England’s Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer led the bowling charge for the hosts.
