Gambhir Responds to Kohli on BCCI Family Rules
Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has finally addressed the ongoing debate around the BCCI’s new rule regarding family presence during overseas tours. The discussion gained attention after Virat Kohli openly expressed disappointment over the recent directive.
Following India’s Test series loss to Australia, the BCCI introduced a rule that restricts families from staying with players beyond 14 days on long overseas tours. The policy applies to tours lasting 45 days or more. Kohli, speaking at an event earlier, called the rule disappointing and argued that the emotional support of family is crucial for a player’s mental balance.
Gambhir, however, took a different stand while speaking to Cheteshwar Pujara. He stated that while families are important, representing the country remains the top priority.
Gambhir Emphasizes Purpose Over Comfort
“Families are important, but you have to remember you are not on a holiday,” Gambhir said. “You’re here with a purpose—to make the country proud. Only a few get this chance, and that responsibility comes above everything else.”
The former cricketer made it clear that he is not against having families travel with the team but emphasized the need for focus. He explained that being part of the Indian cricket team means carrying the hopes of a nation, and that should come before personal comfort.
“If you’re committed to the goal of making India proud, everything else becomes secondary,” he added.
Kohli Voices Concern Over Mental Health Impact
Virat Kohli had earlier expressed his disappointment with the BCCI rule during an event hosted by the RCB Innovation Lab. He highlighted how vital it is for players to have their families around, especially during intense tours.
“It’s very difficult to explain to people how grounding it is to just come back to your family,” Kohli said. “I feel disappointed because people who have no control over what’s going on are being kept away.”
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the BCCI will revisit the policy or stand by the current guidelines. For now, both Kohli and Gambhir have made their positions clear—one focusing on emotional support, the other on professional commitment.
