Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out After Spleen Injury
India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out for nearly two months following a spleen injury sustained in the third ODI against Australia last week. The 30-year-old suffered the blow while attempting a difficult catch to dismiss Alex Carey at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Reports from RevSportz reveal that Iyer underwent a medical procedure to stop internal bleeding and was treated in the intensive care unit at a Sydney hospital. He has now been shifted out of the ICU and is said to be in a stable condition.
The setback means Iyer will miss India’s three-match ODI series against South Africa scheduled next month. His participation in the New Zealand series in January remains doubtful as he may not recover full fitness or match readiness in time. Consequently, his hopes of being part of the T20 World Cup squad have also taken a hit, given that team selection will likely be finalised during that period.
If he fails to return for the New Zealand series, Iyer’s next possible appearance for India could be during the white-ball tour of England in July 2025.
Details of Iyer’s Medical Procedure
The incident occurred last Saturday when Iyer hurt himself trying to complete a tough catch. After leaving the field, his condition worsened in the dressing room, forcing an urgent transfer to the hospital. Scans later confirmed internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen.
Dismissing earlier reports of surgery, BCCI secretary Devajait Saiki clarified that Iyer did not undergo surgery, but rather had a “medical procedure” to stop the internal bleeding.
As per RevSportz, Iyer underwent interventional trans-catheter embolisation, a specialised procedure performed under image guidance in an operating room. It involves guiding a thin catheter through an artery to block the bleeding vessel — a widely accepted technique for controlling internal haemorrhage without open surgery.
Rehabilitation and Future Prospects
Iyer’s recovery process will take several weeks of rest and monitored rehabilitation. The Indian medical team and management are taking a cautious approach, ensuring there is no rush in his return.
His absence creates a gap in India’s middle order, especially ahead of crucial home series and the approaching T20 World Cup. However, if his recovery progresses well, fans can expect him to make a comeback during India’s overseas tour of England next year.
