Irfan Pathan Predicts New Role for Dhruv Jurel
Dhruv Jurel announced himself with a brilliant maiden Test century on Day 2 against West Indies in Ahmedabad. The youngster looked assured from the start, converting his good beginning into a commanding 125 runs off 210 deliveries. His knock included 15 fours and three sixes, showcasing composure and controlled aggression.
By reaching three figures, Jurel became only the 12th Indian wicketkeeper to record a Test hundred and the sixth to do so against the West Indies. Filling in for the injured Rishabh Pant, he seized his opportunity and proved his value in the playing XI.
Irfan Pathan Hails Jurel’s Performance
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised Jurel’s performance on X, highlighting his batting potential beyond keeping duties. “Dhruv Jurel putting his case strong going forward to play as a pure batter,” he wrote. His remarks suggest the youngster could be considered as a specialist batter in future lineups.
Jurel Joins Elite Company
Jurel also became the third Indian wicketkeeper-batter to reach a century against West Indies in India. Before him, Farokh Engineer had struck 109 in Chennai in 1976, while MS Dhoni hammered 144 in Kolkata in 2011. With his hundred, Jurel now stands alongside two of India’s iconic wicketkeeper-batters.
Strong Domestic and A Performances
The century came after consistent performances in recent outings. Jurel had blasted 140 for India A against Australia A in Lucknow. He also notched three fifties in four innings against the England Lions earlier this year. His First-Class record remains strong, with an average of 48.91, 13 half-centuries, and two hundreds across 39 innings.
India Dominate at Stumps on Day 2
India tightened their grip on the match by finishing Day 2 at 448/5 in 128 overs. The hosts built a lead of 286 runs with centuries from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja ended the day unbeaten on 104, while Rahul also impressed with his fluent 100.
After play, Rahul said, “Yeah, it has. Really enjoyed my batting. Playing in different conditions. England was fun. Obviously getting runs there gives you a lot of confidence and coming into this game with some runs behind me also helped. Feeling fresher after a longish break after the series. Yeah, I really enjoyed being back.”
