Sourav Ganguly Signs Dewald Brevis in Record SA20 Deal
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has joined the Pretoria Capitals as their new head coach for SA20 2025, and he made headlines by securing young South African batter Dewald Brevis at a record fee during the auction.
The auction for the 2025 SA20 season took place on Tuesday, with franchises spending big to strengthen their squads. A heated bidding war unfolded between Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings for Brevis. The 22-year-old, already a rising star for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, attracted aggressive bids from both camps.
Stephen Fleming, coach of CSK and Joburg, went all out to sign Brevis and matched every move from Kumar Sangakkara’s Royals. However, when the bidding touched 10 million rand, the Royals backed out. Joburg seemed close to landing their target until Ganguly intervened. The Capitals stunned everyone by sealing Brevis for 16.5 million rand (₹8.31 crore) — the highest fee in SA20 history.
“You know, he got me out too many times when he was captain and we went to New Zealand. On the green, seaming pitches, he had fielders all over, and they kept decking around all the time. So this was an opportunity to beat him, and we went past him,” Ganguly said after the auction.
Brevis’ SA20 record and rise in T20 cricket
Brevis had represented MI Cape Town since SA20’s inception in 2023. In 32 matches, he scored 676 runs at an average of 29.39 and a strike rate of 145, with four half-centuries. His best season came during Cape Town’s maiden title win last year, when he scored 291 runs in 10 matches at an outstanding average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 184.17.
The 22-year-old has also debuted for South Africa in all formats and is enjoying a stellar 2025 in T20 cricket. He has scored 995 runs in 30 innings at an average of 43.26 and a strike rate above 186, including one century and six half-centuries.
Brevis’ IPL 2025 campaign with CSK
Despite Chennai Super Kings’ poor season, Brevis was a standout performer. He scored 225 runs in six matches at an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 180.00, with two fifties. His form made him one of the hottest properties in the SA20 2025 auction, and Pretoria Capitals’ bold move under Ganguly now sets the stage for a thrilling season.
