Shubman Gill’s First Net Session Impressed Shastri
Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has shared a fascinating story about Shubman Gill’s debut training session with the national side. During India’s preparations for the 2019 ODI World Cup, Gill walked into the nets for the very first time. With Virat Kohli as captain and MS Dhoni still in the squad, the youngster faced side-arm throwers and Bangar himself.
According to Bangar, Gill showcased a complete range of shots with ease—drives, cuts, and pulls—leaving everyone stunned. Other nets even stopped as teammates gathered to watch the young batter.
Ravi Shastri’s Reaction: “Play Him Now”
Bangar revealed that then-head coach Ravi Shastri was so impressed that he immediately wanted Gill in the playing XI. “Isko abhi khila do” (Play him now), Shastri reportedly said after witnessing Gill’s stroke play. That moment confirmed to the coaching staff that the youngster had something very special.
Although Gill debuted against New Zealand in 2019 and struggled in his first two ODIs, scoring just 9 and 7, his class was already evident to those inside the dressing room.
Gill’s Rise to Stardom
After a slow start, Shubman Gill cemented his place in 2022 with strong performances, beginning with the West Indies tour. Since then, he has grown into a pillar of Indian batting across formats. He now stands as India’s Test captain and is being speculated as the future all-format skipper.
His journey from a wide-eyed debutant in 2019 to the No.1 ICC ODI batter today underlines how far he has come—proving Shastri’s early instincts right.
