Rajeev Shukla Named Acting BCCI President After Roger Binny Exit
Former India pacer Roger Binny is no longer the BCCI President, marking the end of his tenure at the helm of Indian cricket’s governing body. Rajeev Shukla, who has been serving as Vice-President, has now taken charge as the acting BCCI President until the board holds its next elections.
Sponsorship Challenges After Dream11 Exit
According to a Dainik Jagran report, the Apex Council meeting of the BCCI was held on Wednesday under Shukla’s leadership. The key agenda of the meeting was sponsorship, especially after the sudden termination of Dream11’s contract. The board is now in urgent need of a new sponsor for the next two-and-a-half years.
With the Asia Cup beginning on September 10, time is running out. A BCCI source admitted the difficulty of securing a sponsor before the tournament.
“We don’t even have two weeks left. We are trying, but floating a new tender, completing legal processes, and handling technicalities will take time. As for a short-term sponsor only for the Asia Cup, we are not going that way. Our focus is on securing a sponsor for the next two-and-a-half years, until the 2027 ODI World Cup in October-November,” the source was quoted as saying.
Elections Under Current Framework
Despite the passage of the National Sports Governance Law, the BCCI will still conduct its Annual General Meeting and elections next month. The law has not yet been formally notified, meaning it could take another four to five months before it comes into effect. Until then, elections cannot be postponed.
The board continues to function under the constitution drafted after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Lodha Committee recommendations. The Sports Ministry has also clarified that elections, both at the BCCI and state association levels, will be held under the current rules until further notice.
Lodha Reforms Still in Place
The report emphasized that elections will follow the existing Lodha recommendations. These include the maximum age limit of 70 years for office-bearers, ensuring that anyone elected before reaching that age can serve a full term.
With Shukla now in charge, the BCCI faces a crucial period ahead—managing sponsorship challenges, conducting elections, and ensuring smooth preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.
