BCCI to Discuss ODI Future of Kohli and Rohit
The BCCI will soon hold talks with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma regarding their ODI future, reports suggest. With both icons nearing the final stages of their careers, the discussions are expected to shape India’s long-term plans in the 50-over format. According to Dainik Jagran, the board is also considering Shreyas Iyer as a strong contender to become India’s next ODI captain.
ODI Future Hinges on Veterans’ Decision
The future of India’s ODI team will largely depend on whether Kohli and Rohit wish to continue. Rohit Sharma, who has been leading India in ODIs, could step aside if he chooses not to extend his career in the format. If that happens, Iyer may be appointed to guide the team through a crucial transition period.
Focus on 2027 ODI World Cup
The next ODI World Cup will be held in Africa in 2027, where India aims to reclaim the trophy last won in 2011. Kohli will be 39 and Rohit 40 by then, raising questions about their longevity. The BCCI wants a clear plan well before the tournament, ensuring a smooth leadership handover and giving the new captain time to build his squad.
Selectors and Leadership Transition
Both Kohli and Rohit have already retired from Tests and T20Is, with Ajit Agarkar selection committee managing the transitions effectively. Agarkar, recently rewarded with a contract extension until 2026, has overseen India’s success in two ICC tournaments. Reports also suggest the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia could be the last such series for the veteran duo.
Board’s Approach
The BCCI has made it clear there is no rush to take final decisions. A senior official told PTI, “Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup. Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead.”
With succession talks intensifying, Shreyas Iyer now stands as the leading choice to become India’s long-term ODI captain.
